Berber Kaya was once a large mausoleum from the 2nd century BC. Its name means "Barber Rock", a local nickname for the seated figures that once seemed to resemble customers in a barber's shop.
The site is damaged and fragmentary, partly because tomb robbers tried to break into it with explosives in the 1950s. It is still worth including on a fuller Iznik walk because it pushes the town's story back before the Roman and Byzantine layers.
