Iznik's Hagia Sophia is a small red-brick basilica with an outsized history. The present building dates mainly from the 11th century, but it stands over earlier churches connected with the councils of Nicaea.
The building became a mosque after the Ottoman conquest, later a museum, and then a mosque again. Its patched brickwork, floor remains, and layered religious history make it the single most important stop in town.
