Roman Quarry

Ancient quarry northeast of town, known for a damaged Hercules relief and traces of long stoneworking.

The Roman quarry northeast of Iznik supplied building stone and statuary for a very long time. Its best-known surviving detail is a relief of Hercules, though the site has suffered from damage, dumping, and later quarrying.

It is a rougher stop than the central monuments, but it adds useful context: ancient Nicaea did not only consume stone, it shaped and exported it.
