Kastamonu Castle rises above the old centre on the rocky height that gave the city its name. The fortress began under Byzantine rule and was repaired by later Seljuk, Candarid, and Ottoman powers.
The remaining walls are not huge, but the climb is worthwhile for the city view and for the way it places Kastamonu's river valley, mosques, and old quarters into one frame.
