Hungarian House

The Hungarian House is a restored Ottoman mansion with an unexpectedly European story. Lajos Kossuth, the Hungarian revolutionary leader, lived here in exile after the failure of the 1848 uprising against Habsburg rule.

The museum is modest, but it gives Kütahya a useful link to a wider 19th-century world of revolutions, empires, and political refugees. Even if you know little about Hungarian history, the house is worth a short visit for its timber rooms and quiet garden atmosphere.

A story
Lajos Kossuth led Hungary's 1848 revolution, then escaped Ottoman custody demands from Austria and Russia by taking refuge in the empire. He lived in this Kütahya house in 1850 and 1851 before continuing into a long exile in Britain, the United States, and Italy.
