Arslantepe

UNESCO-listed archaeological mound preserving one of Anatolia's earliest palace complexes.

Arslantepe is the anchor sight of Malatya: a low mound outside the modern city with layers of settlement reaching back thousands of years. UNESCO lists it for the way it preserves early evidence of state formation, administration, and palace life in Upper Mesopotamia's northern world.

The site is not visually dramatic in the way Ephesus or Pergamon is. Its importance is older and quieter: mudbrick walls, storerooms, seals, weapons, and the beginnings of organised power. Check whether it has reopened before making a special trip, as restoration and access have shifted since the 2023 earthquake.

A story
Arslantepe's finds include one of the world's earliest known sword groups, dating to the late 4th millennium BCE. The site helps show how power, storage, seals, and weapons developed before the classical city states most travellers know by name.
