Cybele Relief

Weathered Hittite rock relief of the Anatolian mother goddess on the road below Mount Sipylus.

The Cybele relief is carved into a cliff east of Manisa, along the road under Mount Sipylus. The figure is badly weathered now, but it is generally read as the Anatolian mother goddess Cybele and is often dated to the Hittite period.

That rough survival is part of its appeal. You are not looking at a neat museum piece, but at a battered religious image still fixed in the landscape that created it.
