The Sultan Mosque is Manisa's central Ottoman monument, a 16th-century külliye built for Ayşe Hafsa Sultan, the mother of Suleiman the Magnificent. The complex included a mosque, medrese, soup kitchen, baths, and a hospital, making it a small city of charity and worship rather than just a prayer hall.
The hospital later became known for treating mental illness, and the old medical history museum beside the mosque explains that tradition when open. Even without the museum, the courtyard and stonework make this the best first stop in Manisa's centre.
