St George Church

St George Church is Osmaneli's most striking ruin: a roofless Greek Orthodox church standing in a town where the Greek community is gone. It was built after the great fire of 1874, when much of old Lefke burned, and its rectangular European plan gives it a different feel from the Ottoman houses around it.

The church fell out of use after the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey. What remains is not polished, but it is powerful: high walls, empty windows, and a clear reminder that northwestern Anatolia was once a much more mixed place.

A story
Osmaneli's old name, Lefke, comes from a Greek word linked to poplars. The ruined church is one of the clearest surviving signs of that older town, where Greek and Turkish communities lived in the same river valley before war, fire, and forced exchange remade the population.
