The acropolis above Sardis is broken and less immediately rewarding than the temple or gymnasium, but it gives the site its geography. From here the old city makes sense: river, road, mountain, fortified high ground, and the broad valley that carried trade inland.
Come only if you have time and good footwear. The value is in the view and the feeling of the landscape, not in polished interpretation.
