Cleopatra Gate is the last surviving gate of ancient Tarsus, a squat stone arch now isolated by roads and modern buildings. Tradition says Cleopatra entered the city here in 41 BCE when she came to meet Mark Antony, though the exact form of the gate has changed through later rebuilding.
The romance of the story does some of the work, but the gate still matters as a marker. It fixes ancient Tarsus in the modern street plan and gives you a starting point for walking toward the old centre.
