Vize Ancient Theatre

Late Roman theatre excavated from a tumulus, an unusual survival in Turkish Thrace.

The ancient theatre was found only in the late twentieth century, during excavations around the Çömlektepe tumulus. It is a modest site, and excavation and conservation work have shaped what you can see, but the survival is important: Roman theatres are not common in this part of Thrace.

Look for the remaining cavea, stage area, and the curve of the seating. Some decorated finds from the site are kept in Kırklareli Museum, so the theatre itself feels partly like a clue to a larger ancient town that is still only half visible.
