Giaur Kala is one of the major walled city sites within ancient Merv. Its roughly square walls run for about 2 km, enclosing the remains of the Ben Makhan Mosque and, in the southeast corner, a Buddhist stupa and monastery often described as the westernmost excavated example of its kind.
