Al Zorah Nature Reserve

Mangroves, lagoons and flamingo flocks on the north edge of the emirate

Address Al Zorah, Ajman

Al Zorah is a stretch of mangrove forest, tidal lagoons and beaches at the northern edge of Ajman, protected as a nature reserve and bird sanctuary. The wetlands draw migratory birds — flamingos, herons, ospreys — and you can paddle through the mangroves by kayak or stand-up paddleboard with a guided trip from the visitor centre.

Half the area is given over to a resort and golf course, which keeps the access roads in good shape but means the "wilderness" feeling is moderated. Best visited at dawn or dusk, both for the wildlife and to dodge the heat. The lagoon-side restaurants are popular at sunset.

A story
Several thousand greater flamingos winter in the Al Zorah lagoons, sometimes filling an entire mudflat pink at low tide. They share the space with herons, ospreys and the occasional crab plover — a rare wader that the UAE coast happens to be a regular stop for.
