Al Ain Zoo

One of the finest zoos in the Middle East, with a strong focus on Arabian and African wildlife conservation.

Al Ain Zoo is substantially better than its regional competitors, a fact that becomes clear within the first ten minutes. Founded in 1968, it has had decades to develop its grounds and refine its approach, and it shows: the enclosures are large, the landscaping is mature, and the overall atmosphere is closer to a wildlife park than a traditional zoo. It covers around 900 hectares, making it one of the largest zoos in the world by area.

The collection leans into the zoo's location. Arabian oryx, sand gazelles, and other indigenous species that have been nearly eliminated from the wild in the UAE are well represented, and the zoo has an active breeding programme for several threatened desert species. The African section is strong, with lions, cheetahs, and giraffes in relatively spacious enclosures. The zoo also holds the world's largest collection of Arabian white oryx.

Come early, especially in summer — by mid-morning the heat is serious and most animals are resting. The zoo provides free shuttle buses between sections, which is a practical necessity given the scale. A camel safari within the grounds gives you a different perspective on the landscape. Budget half a day if you intend to cover everything properly. Paid entry; family discount available.
