Progress Stadium is the small football ground at the centre of Zarafshan, holding around three thousand spectators on concrete terraces. It is the home of FK Zarafshon, a club that has spent most of its existence bouncing between the second and third tiers of the Uzbek league. Match days bring out a few hundred locals in the bone-dry desert wind, with the apartment blocks and the chimney plume from the gold processing plant in the background.
There is not much more to say about the stadium itself, but for a traveller who has somehow made it into Zarafshan, an evening watching a local fixture is the most ordinary and authentic thing the city offers. Check fixtures at the gate; tickets cost almost nothing.
