Ma Pi Leng Pass

Ma Pi Leng is the most dramatic of Ha Giang's high mountain passes, dropping 1,600 metres from the plateau edge down to the Nho Que River in a series of vertiginous switchbacks along a cliff face above a turquoise canyon. The canyon itself — carved by the Nho Que River over millennia through the limestone karst — is striking enough to stop riders in their tracks at every overlook. The pass appears roughly midway along the Ha Giang Loop, between Dong Van and Meo Vac.

The viewpoint at the top of the pass is the obvious stop, but the drive along the cliff road is the thing: narrow, exposed, with a sheer drop to the canyon on one side and the cliff wall on the other. Motorcycles can take their time; trucks require careful passing. The river below runs a vivid shade of green-blue that looks almost artificial against the grey limestone. Boat trips on the Nho Que from Meo Vac go into the canyon itself, offering the reverse perspective looking up.

A story
The road over Ma Pi Leng was carved by hand over eleven years by young men from H'mong, Lo Lo, and other minority communities in the 1960s, working without heavy machinery on sheer cliff faces. The route became known as the "Road of Happiness" and was a Soviet-era engineering project intended to connect remote communities to the outside world.
