White Sand Dunes (Bau Trang)

The white sand dunes (Bau Trang) lie about 40 kilometres north of central Mui Ne — a longer drive than the red dunes, but worth it for the scale and the quality of the landscape. The dunes here are dramatically white, contrasting with a small freshwater lagoon fringed by lotus flowers at their base. The combination is beautiful and strange in equal measure.

Most visitors arrive by jeep convoy at dawn for the sunrise — the light on white sand at first light is spectacular, and the dunes are least crowded at that hour. ATV rentals are available for those who want to cover more ground. The dunes extend for several kilometres; walking beyond the tourist infrastructure to the quieter sections is possible and rewarding. Allow three to four hours for the round trip from Mui Ne, including the drive.

A story
The white dunes are sometimes called the "Vietnam Sahara" — a comparison that oversells the scale but captures something of the feeling. In the middle of a country of rice paddies, rivers, and dense vegetation, coming over a dune crest and finding a white sand desert stretching to the horizon is genuinely disorienting. The lotus-edged lagoon at the base of the main dune face adds a specifically Vietnamese touch to the surrealism.
