Kim Lien Relic Site, west of Vinh in Nam Dan district, preserves the village landscape associated with Ho Chi Minh's family and childhood. The thatched houses, family altars, bamboo, ponds, and simple domestic objects are presented as patriotic memory, but they also give travellers a rare rural counterpoint to the city.
It is most rewarding if you already have some interest in modern Vietnamese history. The site can feel reverential, and some displays are framed in official language, yet the modest scale of the homes is affecting. Hire transport from Vinh, go early before tour groups build up, and allow time for both the paternal and maternal village areas.
