Ho Chi Minh Square and Statue

Ho Chi Minh Square is the civic centre of Vinh, a large formal plaza dominated by the tallest statue of Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam. The square is best visited in the early morning or evening, when local residents use it for exercise, socialising, and the kind of leisurely public life that formal squares in Vietnam tend to host.

The surrounding blocks of the city centre give a good impression of the planned reconstruction that transformed Vinh after the war — wide boulevards, Soviet-influenced apartment blocks, and a grid layout quite different from the organic structure of older Vietnamese cities. It is not conventionally beautiful, but it is historically interesting and unlike most cities you will encounter elsewhere in the country.

A story
The statue of Ho Chi Minh in the square is the tallest in Vietnam — a standing figure in bronze, arms slightly outstretched, on a pedestal high enough to be visible from much of the city. Vinh was heavily bombed during the American War, when it was a major logistics hub for supplies moving south along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. After the war ended, the city was rebuilt with substantial assistance from East Germany, which explains its unusually coherent Socialist-era urban planning and the generous scale of squares and boulevards.
