Myall Creek Massacre Memorial Site

National memorial to the 1838 massacre of Wirrayaraay people and the rare colonial convictions that followed.

Myall Creek is one of the most important memorial sites in inland New South Wales. In 1838, 28 Wirrayaraay people were murdered here by stockmen and former convicts; after two trials, seven men were convicted and hanged. That punishment was rare in colonial Australia, and the site has become a place of remembrance, education, and reconciliation.

The memorial walk is quiet and direct, with signs leading across open country to the boulder that marks the massacre site. It is not entertainment, and it should not be treated as a quick roadside curiosity. Give it time, read the panels, and understand why people still gather here each June.
