Age of Fishes Museum

Museum built around Canowindra's rare Devonian fish fossils, one of Australia's great fossil finds.

The Age of Fishes Museum is the reason Canowindra belongs on a curious traveller's map. Its collection comes from a 360-million-year-old fossil bed uncovered by road workers, with hundreds of preserved fish from the Devonian period.

The museum is small but unusually focused. It works best if you slow down and let the displays explain why this dry inland town has one of the world's notable fossil fish collections.
