Fort Bourke Hill Lookout is the simplest way to understand Cobar's mining landscape. The sealed road climbs just east of town to a viewing platform over the open cut and the surrounding scrub, making the scale of the mine clear in a way the main street does not.
Check locally before going, because access can close for works or mining-related reasons. When it is open, it is a quick stop, but a useful one.
