Cowra POW Camp

Ruined prisoner-of-war camp site where the 1944 Cowra Breakout is interpreted on a walking trail.

The Cowra POW Camp site preserves the outline and memory of one of Australia's most dramatic wartime incidents. In August 1944, more than a thousand Japanese prisoners attempted a mass breakout; 231 Japanese prisoners and four Australians died.

Today the site is quiet, open, and direct. A walking trail crosses the ruins and interpretive signs explain the camp layout, the breakout, and the people caught up in it. Stop at the visitor centre first if you want the short hologram presentation before walking the ground itself.
