Parkes Radio Telescope

Huge radio telescope made famous by Apollo 11 and the film The Dish.

The Parkes Radio Telescope is the town's real claim to fame: a 64-metre dish standing in open country north of town. It helped receive television signals from the Apollo 11 moon landing, and the story later became the film The Dish.

There is a small visitor centre and cafe, but the strongest moment is simply standing outside and seeing the dish move against the big Central West sky.
