Burning Mountain Nature Reserve is the most unusual trip from Scone. The walk leads to a natural underground fire, a slow geological event whose heat and smoke have shaped the ground above it.
The reserve is about 20 kilometres north of Scone on the New England Highway. Go for the walk, not for spectacle: the interest is in standing above something still happening under your feet, then looking back across the dry Upper Hunter landscape with that fact in mind.
