Oxley Scenic Lookout is the simple place to understand Tamworth's setting. From the hill above the city you can see the Peel River valley, the grid of town below, and the open country that gives the region its scale.
It is close enough to the centre to be a quick drive, but it feels removed from the traffic. Come late in the day if the weather is clear.
