Tamworth Powerstation Museum

Small museum about Tamworth's early electric street lighting and power machinery.

Tamworth Powerstation Museum tells the city's best non-music story. In 1888, Tamworth became the first town in Australia to use municipal electric street lighting, a sign of ambition in a regional centre that wanted to be modern.

The museum is small, but the machinery and documents give a good sense of how strange and impressive electric light must have felt on a country-town street in the late 19th century.
