White Cliffs Solar Power Station

Early commercial solar thermal power site from Australia's renewable-energy experiments.

The old White Cliffs Solar Power Station is a strange and important relic of early renewable-energy ambition. Built in the early 1980s, it used tracking mirror dishes to concentrate sunlight and helped prove that a remote town could be powered by solar thermal technology.

It is no longer the town's working power source, so this is more heritage site than attraction. Still, in a place better known for opal and dugouts, the solar station adds a sharp and unexpected chapter.
