Flagstaff Point, at the northern end of Wollongong Harbour, is home to two lighthouses — a rarity on any coastline. The older one, built in 1871 on the southern breakwater, is a modest structure that guided ships through the harbour entrance. The second, the main Wollongong Lighthouse, was completed in 1936 on the headland and is an elegant Art Deco tower still active today.
The headland walk around Flagstaff Point takes about 30 minutes and gives good views of the harbour, the beach, and the coast stretching north. It is one of the better whale-watching spots on the Illawarra during the migration season (June to November). The working fishing boats in the inner harbour add to the appeal.
