From Airlie Beach, day boats and liveaboards run to the outer Great Barrier Reef — about two hours east of Airlie depending on conditions. The main sites visited are Bait Reef and Hardy Reef, where pontoons offer snorkelling, introductory dives, and helicopter flights over the famous heart-shaped reef. Closer to the islands, the fringing reefs around Hook, Border, and Blue Pearl Bay off Hayman Island are quieter, often clearer, and reached by day trips on smaller boats.
Visibility is best from August to November, when winds drop and the water clears. Coral bleaching has affected parts of the reef but the Whitsundays still offer some of the most accessible coral-and-fish snorkelling in Australia. Most reef trips include all gear and a marine biologist on board.
