A few minutes' drive east of Beaudesert, Nindooinbah is one of the great pastoral homesteads of South-East Queensland. The original 1858 timber building was much enlarged in 1906 by architect Robin Dods into a long, low Federation-style country house, with deep verandahs and one of the finest gardens of its era in the colony. The 4,000-hectare property is still a working cattle stud (Santa Gertrudis) and the homestead remains in private hands.
The estate is not normally open, but the gardens and house are occasionally part of the Queensland Open Gardens scheme and the Australian Heritage Festival in May. If you can time a visit to one of those weekends, the place is worth a detour; otherwise the gates are closed and there is nothing to see from the road.
