The Birdsville Billabong is the soft surprise at the edge of town: a stretch of water in an otherwise severe outback landscape. Locals swim, paddle, fish, and walk here, and Pelican Point is the favourite place to watch the light move across the water at sunset.
It is also a good reminder that Birdsville belongs to Channel Country, not just the desert. After rain the country can change completely, with water, birds, and green growth appearing where the map suggests only dust.
