Burke and Wills Marked Tree

This coolibah tree just south of Birdsville is marked with a "B" and "76", said to identify camp 76 of the Burke and Wills expedition. It is not the famous Dig Tree on Cooper Creek, but it ties Birdsville to the same grim inland exploration story.

The stop is short, and that is fine. What makes it worthwhile is the setting: a lonely tree near the Diamantina, in country where distance and water still decide every journey.
