New Farm

Inner riverside neighbourhood with the best park and the city's art cinema

New Farm is a wealthy riverside inner suburb about 2 km east of the CBD, reached via the Brunswick Street strip or along the river path. It has the best park in Brisbane — New Farm Park, a large riverside garden full of rose beds and jacaranda trees that turns vivid purple in November — and the Powerhouse, a converted 1920s power station that is now Brisbane's main arts venue for theatre, comedy, and circus.

The main commercial strip on Brunswick Street serves as a more relaxed and residential alternative to the Valley's bar scene: good delis, an excellent cinema (the Palace Barracks), and a cluster of neighbourhood restaurants that fill with regulars on Friday nights. The NewSteadHouse is close by, and the riverside walk east connects New Farm to Newstead and the Howard Smith Wharves precinct in about twenty minutes.
