Esplanade Lagoon

The Esplanade Lagoon is the social heart of Cairns — a 4,800-square-metre free public saltwater pool opened in 2003 on the waterfront. It was designed to solve a real problem: the city is tropical, the sea is warm, but the tidal estuary means no sandy beach and the waters close to shore harbour box jellyfish and saltwater crocodiles. The lagoon gives everyone a safe, free, and gloriously large place to swim.

The surrounding boardwalk, with barbecue areas, fitness equipment, and views across the mudflats to the mountains, makes it easy to spend hours here. At dawn and dusk the light on the water and the hills behind the city is particularly good. Sunsets from the Esplanade are among the better free experiences in Far North Queensland.

The lagoon is open 24 hours, though it is cleaned and briefly closed in the early morning. No booking, no fee, no sunscreen residue restrictions — just show up and swim.

A story
Cairns sits on a tidal mudflat estuary, which means there is no beach in the city centre — and no safe swimming in the sea due to stingers (box jellyfish) and crocodiles. So in 2003 the city built a massive free public saltwater pool right on the waterfront. The lagoon holds four million litres of water, is maintained at a stable temperature, and is open to everyone. On hot days it is packed with locals and backpackers alike.
