James Cook Museum

Former convent museum covering Cook's landing, Aboriginal history, and the gold rush.

The James Cook Museum is housed in a former convent school built in 1888. Its displays cover Cook's enforced stay on the Endeavour River, Aboriginal and natural history, the Palmer River gold rush, and the Chinese miners who shaped early Cooktown.

It is the town's strongest indoor sight and the best first stop if you want the place to make sense before wandering the riverfront.
