Mount Cook National Park protects the slopes just south of Cooktown. Walking tracks climb through tropical vegetation to lookouts over the town, Endeavour River, and coast, giving a good sense of how quickly settlement gives way to rough country here.
It is not a large park, but it is close enough to town to make an easy half-day walk when the weather is not too hot.
