The old Burns Philp Building is a corrugated-iron reminder of Normanton's port years. Built in the 1880s near the river and former wharves, it served the mercantile and shipping company that supplied towns across northern Australia and the South Pacific.
Its curved parapet and warehouse form are still easy to read from the street. The building is not grand in a city sense, but in Normanton it tells the right story: goods came by river, went inland by rail and road, and made this remote town a commercial hinge for the Gulf.
