Mutton Hole Wetlands spread across the floodplain between Normanton and Karumba. In a good season this is rich bird country, with waterbirds feeding and breeding in the shallow wetlands after the Norman River has done its work.
The area is best for patient travellers with binoculars and a tolerance for heat, dust, and changing road conditions. It is not a manicured reserve, but it gives Normanton a direct link to the Gulf's floodplain landscape.
