Great Barrier Reef Day Trips

Palm Cove is one of several northern beaches used as a departure point for reef day trips, with the added advantage of shorter road transfer times than central Cairns. Several operators run from Palm Cove directly, taking guests to the outer reef for snorkelling and diving. The crossing takes around 90 minutes each way; a full day trip typically gives you four to five hours on the reef.

Upolu Cay — a small sand island on the inner reef — is a popular destination for its calm, clear water and accessibility. For the outer reef, look for operators visiting Agincourt Reef or the ribbon reefs further north, where coral health is generally better. Book ahead in the dry season. If you are diving, check operator credentials carefully; the quality gap between companies here is significant.
