Great Barrier Reef Day Trips

Port Douglas is one of the best departure points for the Great Barrier Reef, with multiple operators running daily trips to various reef systems between 45 minutes and two hours offshore. The main outer reef destinations include Agincourt Reef (an exceptional drift-diving site on the ribbon reefs), Opal Reef, and the Low Isles (two small coral cays 15 km offshore that are better suited to snorkelling than the outer reef).

Most day trips include snorkelling and optional scuba diving (introductory dives for non-certified divers are available). Operators range from large boats carrying 100-plus passengers to smaller boutique operators with 20–30 guests. The smaller operations are worth the premium for uncrowded reef access. Check conditions before booking: the months from November to April can see rougher seas and reduced visibility after rain. The dry season (May–October) offers the clearest water.

A story
Port Douglas is closer to the outer reef than Cairns: the continental shelf is narrower here, meaning the boat trip is shorter and the reef conditions are generally better. Dive operators often describe Port Douglas as the better departure point for reef quality, even though it is smaller and less well-known.
