Carlo Sandblow

The Carlo Sandblow is an enormous open expanse of coloured sand, accessible via a short walking track from the southern end of town. The dune system stretches across several hectares, with sand in shades of orange, gold, and pale cream, shaped by wind into ridges and valleys that change from visit to visit.

From the top of the blowout, the views extend along the coast in both directions — north towards K'gari and south past the coloured cliffs. Sunrise and sunset are particularly good here, when the low light intensifies the colours. The walk from town takes about 20 minutes on foot or a few minutes by 4WD along the beach.

A story
The Carlo Sandblow is an active dune — it moves. Sand drifts slowly inland under the prevailing winds, burying the surrounding scrub as it goes. Geologists estimate the blowout has been advancing for thousands of years and is still creeping forward today.
