Double Island Point

Double Island Point is a headland about 15km north of Rainbow Beach, accessible only by 4WD along the beach at low tide. The point marks the junction of two coastlines and offers sweeping views in both directions — south along the coloured sand cliffs and north towards Great Sandy National Park. The lighthouse here dates to 1884 and sits on a low grassy hill above the rocks.

The point is one of Queensland's better-known surf breaks, with a long right-hand wave that peels off the headland in good swells. It can get quite powerful. There is no shade and no facilities, so bring water and food. Check tide times before you go — the beach crossing to reach the point is impassable at high tide.

A story
The lighthouse at Double Island Point was built in 1884 after a series of shipwrecks on this notoriously difficult stretch of coast. The light has been automated since 1925 but still operates, guiding vessels around the headland where the Coral Sea meets the Great Sandy Strait.
