Forty kilometres north of Coober Pedy, the unsealed road past the Breakaways crosses the Dog Fence. There is a small parking area, an interpretation board, and a section of the fence stretching east and west to the horizon — a wire-mesh barrier maintained continuously since the 19th century. Crossing it is a low-key but striking moment.
Most visitors combine the Dog Fence with the Breakaways and the so-called Moon Plain into a half-day loop drive. A 2WD is generally fine in dry weather but check road conditions in town first — a rare wet spell can close the unsealed roads for days.
