Coongie Lakes is the standout excursion from Innamincka, a remote wetland system where desert country suddenly opens into water, birds, campsites, and big skies. It is one of the strongest reasons to come this far into the northeast corner of South Australia.
The lakes are reached by 4WD tracks, and conditions change quickly after rain. Check locally before setting out, carry enough fuel and water, and treat the drive as part of the trip rather than a quick detour.
