Moonta Mines

Historic copper-mining precinct with walking trails, ruins, museums, and Cornish community stories.

Moonta Mines is the reason Moonta deserves more than a quick coastal detour. The precinct spreads across the old copper field, with walking trails linking engine-house ruins, tailings, miners' cottages, and the places where the Cornish community built its schools and chapels.

It is best treated as a half-day wander rather than one stop. Some National Trust-run attractions can have limited hours, so check before setting out, but the mining landscape itself gives the town its weight.
