The Port Germein Tide Clock is a small restored maritime relic on the Esplanade. Its job was practical: in a port where shallow water ruled everything, ships needed to know the state of the tide before crossing the sandbanks and channels.
It is not a major sight on its own, but it sharpens the way you read the foreshore. Look at the clock, then look at the length of the jetty and the exposed flats, and the old port suddenly makes sense.
