The Port Wakefield Historical Walk is the easiest way to see the town as more than a line of roadhouses. The route follows interpretive signs through the older streets and riverfront, with stops tied to the 1850s port, the former horse-drawn tramway, churches, stores, and railway workers' cottages.
It is a modest walk, not an outdoor museum, but it gives useful shape to a town that many travellers otherwise pass without noticing.
