Aradale

Vast former lunatic asylum complex visited on historical and after-dark tours.

Aradale is the sprawling former Ararat Lunatic Asylum, a hilltop institutional complex that operated for more than a century. The buildings are stark, extensive, and best understood with a guide, because the site is less about decoration than about the scale of nineteenth- and twentieth-century mental health care.

Tours often lean into ghost stories, but the stronger reason to go is the history. The place is large enough to change how you read the town below it.
